In the second edition of my newsletter I concentrate on some of the high end print work I have done for Leeds companies. Also try the QuarkXPress tip below, it may just save you a few hours. Next issue will deal with Web issues & tips.
Tips: QuarkXPress Find/Change
Find those annoying extra colours taken up by blank spaces which could cause problems when going to press by using the 'Find/Change' utility. With all check boxes unchecked except colour, you can quickly zoom through a text heavy document & find the offending elements. Also create a pdf & open in Adobe Acrobat Professional, select overprint preview to check for unwanted colours still in your document, or run your document through Markzware's Flightcheck for a thorough pre-press check. But more about that next time.
While at Propaganda I got to work on a lot of high end fashion artwork where the emphasis was on quality. This was one of a series of Course Ring binder packs that went out to the salons. The aim here was to capture the extra colours & font variations used by designers & to standardise the overall procedure. Remember that just because the document looks ok, the use of postscript & true type fonts can cause havoc at repro, case in point for the 'Din' font which was used, but different font foundry versions were found to be used in the document as well.
While I was freelancing at Intermarketing, Leeds, I was given the task of taking a visual version of the Grattan Brand Guidelines to produce the complete final artwork. I was also to create master logos for print, online & presentations (cmyk, rgb & png). I was also to write the specific guidelines for how logos were to be used in each application including minimum size, exclusion zones, do's & don't's etc. The final artwork cmyk only - a challenge as nearly 40 spot colours existed in the document to start with. It's a tricky line to walk, under/over charging, trying to offer more than you have to ability to do in the pursuit of getting the work. With nearly 22 years experience, I believe that the rate I charge of £20/hr* presents good value, but with the back up of good references, vast experience in multiple skills, this represents great value. I believe an individual is only as good as the work they produce, thus I able to showcase a wealth of different projects, back up case studies & working examples. Please feel free to give me a call on 07985 990134 for further information. *Subject to negotiation on longer projects.
