Apologies for the previous issue of my newsletter. In an attempt to get it out on time & currently working 5 issues in advance I neglected to do a second check what I had written. With a death in the family, having to get the the other end of the country for a funeral, time was against me. I sincerely hope you with forgive my well meaning, but slightly flawed issue. To err is human, to forgive is divine. Thank you, Steve Brooke, May 2007.
Tips: Dreamweaver Link Checker
Using Dreamweaver can get complicated sometimes, so before you upload your site, it is wise to run a link check over your site (menu>Window>Results>Link Checker - F7). You can check an individual page or a whole site & prevents embarrassment when you click on a link that does not work. Dreamweaver these days even has a spell checker (Shift F7) that checks only displayed text, not code. Over the coming months I will tell you lots more about Web applications. Next time I'll discuss Flash tips to save you time.
Case Study No. 4 - Poulter Partners website (1999)
In 1999 I worked with Poulter Partners to turn amazing designs into workable pages. Back then optimisation was key & bandwidth was low. Taking Quark designs & turning them into web pages was the necessary. I did this, by creating pdfs, opening them up in photoshop, then copying & pasting items. Back then few people had the flash plugin, so every flash object had to load a static image, if the flash plugin was not available & load an image, with links if the flash file had links. This was done with 'Aftershock' & now a thing of the past. A link to this site exists in my portfolio.
In 2003 while freelancing at CDS, I got to work on Peatlands website, a division of English Nature in Northern Ireland. This was a large site where I got to design specific pages, section identities, optimise images & create multiple video formats, Flash, Real Media, Windows Media, Quicktime & optimise page designs at code level. I helped create css (Cascading Style Sheets) that handled all table line work at code level instead of loading images or flash objects. This was a project that lasted a few months, but everybody including the client were very pleased with the clean look & fast loading of a content rich website. A link to this site exists in my portfolio.
It's a tricky line to walk, under/over charging, trying to offer more than you have to ability to do in the pursuit of getting the work. With nearly 22 years experience, I believe that the rate I charge of £20/hr* presents good value, but with the back up of good references, vast experience in multiple skills, this represents great value. I believe an individual is only as good as the work they produce, thus I able to showcase a wealth of different projects, back up case studies & working examples. Please feel free to give me a call on 07985 990134 for further information. *Subject to negotiation on longer projects.
