Dear Viewer,
In issue 5 of my newsletter I concentrate on some of the artwork/print work I have done for Leeds companies. Also talk about why 'Lees is More' when it comes to freelance charging. Next issue I will deal with multimedia issues.
Tip: Adobe Illustrator Offset Path
Adobe Illustrator tip image
When creating artwork in Adobe Illustrator, the Offset Path is incredibly useful. Start by creating your trim area, can be irregular, contain rounded corners etc - a good idea is to do this on a layer & call it trim & guides. Grab the trim object & select menu> filter> create> crop marks, grab the trim object again, then select menu> path> offset path, type in a value of 3mm, this will create a perfect offset bleed area of 3mm. You can now cut & paste this object onto an artwork layer. Remember to create a spot colour for your trim & crop marks & set it to overprint stroke & rename the colour to something like cutter.

Case Study No. 8 - GHD Gospel España
GHD Gospel España
This 28 page magazine was always a challenge as it contained a collection of previous advertisements, product reviews & last minute news items. The product reviews usually required taking existing artwork with spot & metallic colours & turning them into full colour pieces. The ads were to be resized from existing ads to the smaller format, but the proportions had to remain intact, not just pro down in size. Add to this the copy coming through at the last minute in different languages, this always presented challenges to the artworker. The software, 'Flightcheck', was an essential tool to capture every possible printing problem before the job left the studio.

Case Study No. 9 - Freemans DM piece
Freemans
This piece of Direct Marketing was a simple A3 folded to A4 double sided leaflet for Freemans catalogues. As with all DM work, time is short & budgets are tight. The main problem with this job was the photography that came into studio was late, lighting on shots was poor & the product supplied had blemishes. Here I had to do a lot of photoshop work, recreating the background (stormy skies, dark trees, models face blurred, cleaning product up etc). Luckily my experience in photo-retouching at a repro company years before came in handy & the finished product went to print on time & looking great.

Less is More

£20 per hour image
It's a tricky line to walk, under/over charging, trying to offer more than you have to ability to do in the pursuit of getting the work. With nearly 22 years experience, I believe that the rate I charge of £20/hr* presents good value, but with the back up of good references, vast experience in multiple skills, this represents great value. I believe an individual is only as good as the work they produce, thus I able to showcase a wealth of different projects, back up case studies & working examples. Please feel free to give me a call on 07985 990134 for further information. *Subject to negotiation on longer projects.
