Aquatic Invertebrates

Peatlands provide ideal habitat for a large range of aquatic invertebrates. The greatest diversity of these species, on both bogs and fens, is in areas of standing water. Some species are truly aquatic, spending all their life in the water, while others have an aquatic larval stage but live out of the water as adults. Information on some of the most common groups and species of aquatic invertebrate occuring in peatland pools is given in the table below:
